Websites visited:
What is important for students to know:
-
That the first search result from a
search engine is not the best but instead the site that either: (1) has
the search phrase in the address or (2) has the largest number of other
websites linking to it.
-
Find a bogus website about your subject,
and have the kids answer questions from/about the website. (fx. Sir
Francis Drake on www.allaboutexplorers.com) It's better that you
manipulate them before they are manipulated in their own research.
-
Narrow their search with "site:" or "url:"
-
Facebook owns any content you upload and collects information from anything you or your contacts post.
-
clusty.com categorizes search results.
-
With the internet, you can find primary sources (blog, forum, etc.) to
talk to people who have first hand information. Search, for example, on
blog search engine Technorati.
-
Custom design a search engine in Google, containing only sites added by the teachers.
What not to do:
-
Getting you to stop something is more difficult than getting you to, for example, set up a SmartBoard in your classroom.
